چکیده

We present the first steps of a pioneering didactic approach addressed to primary and secondary school: usually detached in the Educational Robotics literature, the learning of robotics and through robotics are here rejoined. This approach is rooted in constructivism and invites children to become authors of their own learning tools rather than merely users. Visual representations of didactic content and mobile robots are the items to be constructed by the supervised children. A methodological analogy is set between the construction and manipulation of these two items: they are both subjects of a problem solving procedure whose results are supposed to affect each other. A scenario is proposed to assess our approach and to set the basis of an educational program and tool-artifact. Future works will focus on the validity of this approach and to ultimately verify the impact of technology on children skills improvements with relation to engagement, visually content organization, and aware interaction with technology.

Reinforcement Learning in Robotics: Applications and Real-World Challenges

In robotics, the ultimate goal of reinforcement learning is to endow robots with the ability to learn, improve, adapt and reproduce tasks with dynamically changing constraints based on exploration and autonomous learning. We give a summary of the state-of-the-art of reinforcement learning in the context of robotics, in terms of both algorithms and policy representations. Numerous challenges fac...

Exploring Social Robots as a tool for Special Education to teach English to Iranian Kids with Autism

This case study investigates the effects of Robot Assisted Language Learning (RALL) on English vocabulary learning and retention of Iranian children with high-functioning autism. Two groups of three male students (6-10 years old) with high-functioning autism participated in the current study. The humanoid robot NAO was used as a teacher assistant to teach English to the RALL group. Both RALL an...

State Representation Learning in Robotics: Using Prior Knowledge about Physical Interaction

State representations critically affect the effectiveness of learning in robots. In this paper, we propose a roboticsspecific approach to learning such state representations. Robots accomplish tasks by interacting with the physical world. Physics in turn imposes structure on both the changes in the world and on the way robots can effect these changes. Using prior knowledge about interacting wit...

Data Preparation for Inductive Learning in Robotics

The application of logic-based learning algorithms in real-world domains, such as robotics, requires extensive data engineering, including the transformation of numerical tabular representations of real-world data to logic-based representations, feature and concept selection, the generation of the respective descriptions, and the composition of training and test sets, which meet the requirement...
